I hope you have been fortunate to collect one of my wonderful little seed bags at the Cornwall Home and Lifestyle Show in Wadebridge this year.
Sweet peas are loved for their delicate, fluttering flowers, gorgeous colours, and heavenly scent. This particular variety Lathyrus odoratus 'Cupani Original' is a true heirloom wonder. The little seedlings will grow to bushy plants of approx. 1.8m height and produce masses of maroon and purple flowers. These will make lovely cut flower posies with a beautiful deep scent.
Facts:
'Cupani Original' is a collection from the wild in Sicily, this strain has all the original characteristics of Father Franciscus Cupani's original variety, as sent to Dr Robert Uvedale in 1699.
Tips and tricks:
Winter sown: Sow indoors Oct, grow on "hard" in frames, pinch out leader at 4 true leaves. Plant out Mar-May according to weather. Spring sown: Sow April/May in open ground, 1-2cm deep. Allow to grow up canes, trellis or net or to climb shrubs. Keep well watered. Pick flowers regularly to encourage others.
Good to know :
As sweet peas are annuals, you may collect some of your new precious seeds from this year's pods for another spectacular display next year.
