Lepas anatifera
On a different matter, these goose barnacles have been washed up on the beach today. They grow in dense aggregations on flotsam, with delicate chalky white shells anchored to the object - here a large wooden pole - with a fleshy black stalk.
They are a type of crustacean, related to crabs and lobsters and a delicacy in some places. They remind me of a puffin’s head or beak. Amazing creatures!
